Here are some tips to keepyour racquets in tip top shape:
- Buy a bag to hold your racquets. This will protect the racquet and string from damage when transporting them and storage. It is also good to have 2 or more playing racquets with you at a time. This is so you'll be prepared if your racquet is damaged or your strings pop.
- Never ever slam or throw down your racquet. This can crack the frame, loosen the graphite or cause irreparable damage. A good racquet can be an expensive investment and breaking it is not going to turn back time so that you can recover that point you missed.
- Remove loose graphite. Sometimes normal wear and tear can cause the graphite to loosen. If you hear rattling in your racquet this is probably the cause. Just remove the butt cap located at that bottom of the handle and shake out graphite.
- Replace your grips. If you notice that you are losing control of your racquet and the racquet is flying out of your hand during play, this is a good indicator that you need to replace your grip. Grips are easy to replace, inexpensive, and come in all types.
- Replace your headguard. This is the strip of plastic at the top of the racquet. It is there to take damage but if you notice it peeling off, pieces falling off it is time to replace it. Replacing damaged headguards will prevent further damage to the racquet frame and strings. You can also purchase headguard tape to further the life of your headguard.
- Watch your strings. Breaking or popping strings is normal in tennis play. However the key is to know when to replace string before it breaks. If you notice fraying, discoloration, or loss of tension it is time to get your string replaced. Good stringing habits also will extend the life of your frame. Your frame flexes with the tension of the strings. Popped string or lose string can cause one area of the frame to flex while another is loose. This puts stress on the frame.
- Only string at the tension recommended on the racquet. Tension for each racquet has been set by the manufacturer for a reason. They have tested which tension setting works with and doesn't damage the racquet.
